Used cars are selling well, according to a study which highlights the most popular models in various categories.

Industry expert cap hpi said last week that the Fiat 500 is the fastest selling used city car at dealerships in the UK, while the fastest selling supermini is the ever-popular Ford Fiesta.

"The key positive for the used market to take from this is that there is strong appetite for used vehicles, particularly convertibles, executives, lower medium cars, MPVs, superminis and SUVs, with the most popular snapped up in just two days," commented Philip Nothard, consumer and retail specialist at cap hpi.

The study looked at data on the number of used cars advertised in the UK to identify which makes and models are selling best and how quickly they leave the forecourt.

Separate research by cap hpi shows that a total of 2,008,439 used vehicles were sold across the UK in the second quarter of 2016, with prices underpinned by strong consumer demand.

The number of used car transactions increased by 5.9% compared with same period in 2015.

Nothard explained: "Despite large volumes of used vehicles available the market has remained steady through 2016, with the market following seasonal trends.

"And while June saw a sharp decline in activity, it should be noted that total volumes in the month exceeded those of June 2015.

"Additionally, 2016 remains 9.4% ahead of 2015 over the first half of the year, which is significant against a 2015 figure, only 0.54% ahead of 2014 at the same point."
