Update from James Leese, Chief Customer Officer - Cox Automotive

It’s almost two months since dealers reopened their doors in England – and a few weeks less for those in Wales and Scotland. Demand for used vehicles has been high and our auction programme has attracted huge volumes of buyers. But, I think it’s fair to say that everyone in the industry remains cautious about the challenges ahead.

At Cox Automotive, all our businesses are back-up and running and it’s great to be supporting customers again.

We are seeing strong arrivals at all Manheim Vehicle Services sites – with despatches and the number of cars in storage increasing too. Our Movex platform is experiencing increased volumes and recently saw a record number of job postings placed on the platform. Our Manheim Inspection Services business is also busy too.

We will be continuing to run online-only auction sales throughout August, and have an extensive sales programme in place. We have seen strong performances from our online programme over the last few weeks – across cars and LCV - with conversion rates exceeding expectations.

Our recently launched support package – Accelerate - makes it easier for customers to buy online, has also been well-received, which is great to see.

The pandemic has forced us all to work differently and think differently. We’ve been working with our vendor customers closely to ensure sales not only go ahead but remain engaging, fun and productive. Our teams will always be happy to discuss new solutions so don’t hesitate to talk to us.

While things are hopefully looking up for our industry, there’s clearly a long road ahead which we’ll face together. The recent local lockdown in Leicester reminds us that Covid-19 is very much present in our communities. We continue to take every precaution to ensure our premises are Covid secure – the wellbeing of our team members and customers will always come first.

Finally, we know the pandemic is causing many dealers to think differently about their business. Thank you to everyone who responded to our recent Sentiment Survey. The survey always produces some interesting results. This latest one revealed that 35% of dealers believe it will lead to them permanently changing the way they do business.

It also showed us that dealers will increasingly adopt a multi-channel approach to their stock acquisition in the future. The good news is that we are perfectly set-up to help you do just that and here to support you!

Keep an eye on this website and our social media channels for the latest updates and I wish your business continued success on this road to recovery!

Stay safe and well.

James

Cox Automotive UK CEO, Martin Forbes, has recorded a video update on how we’ve reacted to the coronavirus pandemic and why ‘doing the right thing’ continues to guide our decision making.

Cox Automotive has put the health and wellbeing of our people and customers before all else throughout this emergency and will continue to do so.

We are currently developing reactivation plans around the business, ensuring we are ready and prepared for when UK Government restrictions change. We will be first out the blocks to help our customers get the wheels of our industry turning again.

FAQ

This FAQ aims to answer your questions about the steps we’re taking in response to Government advice and instruction.

What changes have Manheim implemented?

We have implemented numerous actions since the pandemic escalated and are continuing to do so.

July 2021: We’re commencing a benchmarking exercise at a selected number of Manheim Auction Centres from w/c 19th July to help us understand the role of physical auctions in our future strategy. Five sales per week across three auction sites – Leeds, Birmingham and Colchester – will open to physical buyers for an initial 4-6 week period.

The three sites selected offer good geographical coverage and the sales consist of the right profile stock from a representative sample of vendors. The insight and feedback gathered through these sales over this initial period will guide any further decisions to restart specific physical sites or sales.

We will continue to waive online fees for buyers using Simulcast across our full sales programme. All other elements of our Accelerate programme remain in place.

Vehicle viewings: Our sites are open for appointment only viewings for Manheim account holders to give you the chance to view stock ahead of each sale.

No changes to buyer tiers: We understand that customer buying habits might have been affected in 2020. If they fall into that category, then there’s no need to worry about their buyer tier changing. We’re deferring all annual buyer account reviews until at least the middle of the year.

10th September, 2020

Manheim extends customer support package

Manheim Vehicle Services is now in operation, and with the appropriate safety protocols in place, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and social distancing measures for our colleagues, we are able to allow vehicle movements in and out of our sites.

All auctions at this time are 'Simulcast Only' and only accessible to Manheim Account holders.

All vehicle collections from a Manheim site are appointment only.
When will your physical locations reopen?

We’re commencing a benchmarking exercise at a selected number of Manheim Auction Centres from w/c 19th July to help us understand the role of physical auctions in our future strategy. Five sales per week across three auction sites – Leeds, Birmingham and Colchester – will open to physical buyers for an initial 4-6 week period.

Can I view vehicles before a sale?

Our sites are open for appointment only viewings for Manheim account holders to give you the chance to view stock ahead of each sale and naturally, we’ve strict social distancing measures in place to keep you safe.

For auction sites that are part of our benchmarking exercise, our auction sites will be open one hour prior to the start of the auction for viewings. Please note, you must have registered for the auction to be allowed on site.

Watch our 'What to expect' video here.

Can you deliver won vehicles?
Yes. Manheim Logistics is operating as normal, with the appropriate COVID-secure measures in place. To arrange delivery please contact the relevant auction site. Alternatively, collections can be arranged via Movex if required – click here to arrange.

How will we know when business operations return to normal?
We've increasing our online Simulcast sales programme and continue to offer our support package to help accelerate customers return to business. This doesn't mean that we won't be returning to physical auctions – and will be reviewing this regularly in line with Government advice around social distancing and mass gatherings.

We will communicate further once we are able to through our website, social channels and email.
