Plant machinery auction trends and opportunities

The landscape for plant machinery auctions in the UK is shifting fast, and the signs are clear following recent sales across the industry. With the highest levels of asset disposal seen in the past five years, it’s a key moment for buyers and sellers alike to capitalise on market momentum.

To get an inside view of what’s happening and what’s next, James Ward, Industrial Business Development Manager here at Manheim Auctions, shares what you need to know ahead of our next commercial plant auction, on 22nd May.

Strong demand and quality stock

A combination of increased supply and strong demand is reshaping the market for the better, creating real opportunity for commercial buyers and sellers.

“We're seeing top prices for older, quality machinery, especially those heading to overseas markets,” explains James. “At the same time, younger assets are also being released as companies de-fleet to optimise costs and cashflow. Overall, supply is almost back to pre-COVID levels as OEMs are pushing compelling deals on new equipment.”

A changing UK market brings more flexibility

“It’s no longer about snapping up what’s available,” says James. “Thanks to more choice, buyers have more flexibility and can therefore focus on finding the right equipment for the job, all while buying it in a reasonable timeframe — that’s a huge shift from the post-COVID world of long lead times and limited options.”

How can dealers and fleets take advantage?

“Act now and sell smart with minimal risk, and potential for maximum return,” advises James. “Review your stock. If you’ve got aged or underused assets, now’s the time to move them on. With high interest rates, it just doesn’t make sense to let machinery sit idle.”

Looking ahead to Q3 and Q4

According to James, this positive momentum isn’t set to falter anytime soon either.

“The growth in our HGV and plant auction operations tells us Q3 and Q4 will be even stronger,” James says. “We’re reaching new sectors and continuing to build momentum, indicating now is the time for sellers to take action.”

What to expect at Manheim’s Plant auction, 22nd May

Our upcoming Plant and Machinery auction will feature a wide mix of equipment from national rental fleets, end users, OEM Dealers and even high-spec, low-hour Ministry of Defence assets. The line-up promises more variety, more lots, and more value.

“We’ve curated a really attractive mix,” says James. “Whatever sector you operate in — construction, aggregates or infrastructure — there will be something for you.”

Why buyers and sellers are choosing Manheim

“People are realising just how large and capable Manheim is, not just in the UK but globally,” says James.
“Thanks to our business model, which focuses on delivering value for both sides of the transaction, we’re becoming a familiar and trusted name in the UK plant auction market, just as we are in the car and LCV market. That’s reflected in more plant and machinery dealers partnering with us and the growing interest for each event we hold.”

Key benefits of Manheim’s commercial plant auctions:

  • Frequency: Auctions every two weeks mean faster turnaround and better cashflow.
  • Quick payments: Manheim average a 5-day payment turnaround supporting your business cashflow.
  • Reduced risk: Sellers retain pricing control through reserve lots.
  • National reach: Multiple UK locations mean lower transport costs.
  • Live auctions: All assets are driven through the hall, allowing buyers to bid live in person or online with full confidence in the equipment.
